What Exactly is SEO?!

Anyone with a website or blog has heard of SEO.  Particularly now as technology continues to rapidly advance, we hear about SEO more and more.  But what exactly is SEO?

Well for starters, SEO stands for “search engine optimization.”  This is the process of improving the visibility of your website or blog on the internet to search engines through “natural” search results.  A ranking will be assigned to your website or blog, and it will appear more frequently and higher on a search engine.  This means that you will reach more readers quickly.

To help determine your website or blog’s ranking, search engines send out “crawlers” to find pages.  From there, the crawlers and search engines will evaluate your website and use certain ranking factors to actually give your website a rank.

Some of these factors include the quality of your content, buzzwords you used and visitors also used, how long visitors stay on your site, titles with relevant keywords, strong descriptions, headers with tags, accessibility of these crawlers, how fast your website can load, what country you are in and someone is visiting you, your locality, how often this person visits your site (their history), how many links you have, and how many times your site has been linked too.  Additionally, there are many other factors which we do know and many others which we do not know because search engines have kept them secret!

Moreover, there are some factors that we know HURT our rankings.  This includes weak content, multiple links (spam), paid advertisers, and hidden text or links.

One really interesting image describing SEO is in the form of the periodic table.  Take a look from this website here: http://searchengineland.com/seotable.
